A fast, affordable solution for everyday printing, laser printers are an excellent option for the
home office and workplace alike. In this article, we explore the ins and outs of laser printing
and the advantages of investing in this particular type of printing technology.

What are they?

As the name suggests, laser printers use LED technology to fix microscopic particles of toner
onto paper and form an image. This technology was pioneered by Xerox in 1969 and
commercial models were first made available by IBM in 1976. The strength of these printers
lies in their speed and economy, they are most effective when printing text and graphics but
are not particularly effective when it comes to photographs. The monochrome models are by
far the most efficient (the fastest monochrome models can produce up to 200 pages a minute)
but slower running colour models are available. Both use dry ink (toner) to print.

How do they work?

They key process involved in laser printing involves passing a laser beam over a negatively
charged cylinder known as a drum which reproduces a differentially-charged image. The drum
attracts charged toner powder to transfer the image onto paper. The paper is then passed
through a fuser where it is superheated to bond with the toner. The drum is recharged each
time a new printing request is sent to the printer.

Why should I buy one?

There are a number of advantages in choosing to invest in a laser printer including:

Ink free

This technology uses toner (polymer particles) which is bonded to the paper
through a heating process. Because there is no ink, there is no chance of anything
drying out or smudging.

Cheaper to operate

The average printing cost of a monochrome laser printer is 3 cents per page which is
around a tenth of the cost of using an inkjet model.  It’s possible to print hundreds or
even thousands of sheets of paper off a single toner cartridge as they are incredibly long lasting.

Reliability

Given the volume of pages these models are capable of producing, many people expect
these printers to have a high burnout rate but in actual fact, laser models are famous for
their extended service life which can be over a decade for commercial models.

Higher quality text

The quality of monochrome text printed on a laser printer surpasses that of an inkjet with crisp
characters and a glossy finish.
